Celebrating Women's History Month with ATCs Inspired by Hilma af Klint!

"Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish pioneer of art that turned away from visible reality. By 1906, she had developed an abstract imagery of her own style and was several years before Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, and Kazimir Malevich (1878–1935), who are still regarded as the pioneers of abstract 20th-century art. Her paintings are considered among the first major abstract works in Western art history."

Hilma af Klint assumed that there was a spiritual dimension to life and aimed at visualizing contexts beyond what the eye can see. When painting, she believed that she was in contact with a higher consciousness that spoke and conveyed messages through her. Like many of her contemporaries, she was influenced by spiritual movements, especially spiritualism, theosophy and later anthroposophy. Through her paintings, she sought to understand and communicate the various dimensions of human existence."

She specified that her work should be kept secret for at least 20 years after her death. When the boxes were opened at the end of the 1960s, very few persons had knowledge of what would be revealed. In 1970 her paintings were offered as a gift to Moderna Museet in Stockholm, but the donation was declined at that time. They were then donated to a foundation bearing the artist's name later in the 1970s. In the 1980, thanks to the art historian Åke Fant, her art was introduced to an international audience. The collection of abstract paintings includes more than 1200 pieces. It is now owned and managed by the Hilma af Klint Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden and in February 2018, the Foundation signed a long-term agreement of cooperation with the Moderna Museet. Her work now resides at there in the Hilma af Klint Room, a dedicated space at the museum where a dozen works of the artist are shown on a continuous basis.

This is a great synopsis of her work: https://www.modernamuseet.se/stockholm/en/exhibitions/hilma-af-klint-2013/about-the-artist/

This is a nice explanation of an exhibition of her work in Japan: https://www.momat.go.jp/en/exhibitions/561

Thank you for the invite and also for the due date of May 30th lots of wiggle room! :) I like that Hilma uses a lot of circles and circular shapes, and squiggles! Please add me to the swap!

I will be in Europe later this spring, maybe I can visit her work. Wouldn't that be amazing?!
Please sign me up.

I'd like to join, please. I wasn't familiar with her work. But WOW, it's incredible. I followed the link you included of her Ten Largest. That photo of people standing in the gallery with the art shows just how big some of the pieces are, and so beautiful.
