Surreal Titles from AI (Photomontage)

This swap invites you to explore surrealism through analog photomontage, using the unexpected and dreamlike as your creative guide. Each artist will use AI (such as ChatGPT) to generate a surreal title, which will serve as the prompt for your card. The result should be a strange, whimsical, eerie, or thought-provoking piece that visually interprets your AI-generated title. Let the randomness lead you to something unexpected!

You must include the title on the back of your card, and you're encouraged to share your title in the swap thread when you generate it—it’s fun to see what wild prompts we each get!

What is Photomontage?
Photomontage is an art technique that combines multiple photographs or photographic elements into a single composition. In this swap, only analog photomontage is allowed—this means creating your piece by hand using scissors, glue, paper, magazines, photographs, and other found images (no digital manipulation allowed). Additionally, found text will be allowed.

Here are some photomontage artists for reference (feel free to share others in the thread):
  • Richard Hamilton
  • Hannah Höch
  • Barbara Kruger
  • Joe Webb
  • Jesse Treece
  • Mikhail Siskoff

Need Help Generating a Surreal Title?

You can use ChatGPT (or any AI tool) to generate a surreal, imaginative, or dreamlike title to inspire your photomontage. Here’s how:
  1. Go to ChatGPT (chat.openai.com) or another AI tool of your choice
  2. Type a prompt like:
    • “Give me a surreal title for an artwork or collage.”
    • “Make up a poetic and strange title that sounds like it came from a dream.”
    • “Give me a list of three surreal artwork titles that could inspire a photomontage.”
  3. Choose the title that sparks your imagination and build your card around it!
  4. Be sure to write the title clearly on the back of your card.
*If you would prefer for me to generate titles for you, let me know.*

Swap Requirements:
  • Original artwork: Analog photomontage only—hand-cut and assembled by you using found imagery
  • Standard ATC size: 2.5 x 3.5 inches
  • 3:3 swap (hostess cards are never a requirement, but always treasured!)
  • Good craftsmanship: Send work you’d be proud to receive—clean cuts, secure glue, thoughtful composition
  • Each card must be sturdy—use backing if needed
  • Each card should be in a protective sleeve
  • Be sure to include your username, the swap name, your location, and the date on the back of each card.

Mailing Instructions:

U.S. Participants
Include a legible SASE (Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope)

International Participants
Include a mailing label with your name and address, clearly written or typed. I will provide the return envelope. Please include one well-concealed US dollar bill or a US Global Forever Stamp. If you don’t have these, I will happily cover postage.

Packaging
Package your cards securely to prevent damage in transit.

When ready to send, please send me a private message and post in the thread to let me know your cards are on their way. All cards must arrive on or before the due date.

It’s always inspiring when artists share their cards (and AI-generated titles) in the thread—please feel free to do so!

When you receive your return cards, leave itrader for your hostess (that’s me!) and reputation points for the players whose work you received.

I’m curious and trying to make sure I understand.

Other than getting the AI titles, we’re not using digital anything, but making surreal photomontages with magazines and other tangible materials? Is that right?

I’ve done a little looking at artists and want to look more, but the most recognizable image I can think of is the Beatles Sgt Pepper’s album cover, with all the famous people collages around them? Also some of Nick Bantock’s work might seems possible?

You’ve got it- only using technology to generate your titles. Sgt. Pepper album cover is a good example of photomontage. I also think some of Nick Bantock’s work would fall into that category, like what I’ve seen from The Artful Dodger.

Just a little more info to clarify the difference between photomontage and collage:

That is really cool! I’m watching YouTube videos and I can’t wait to get started.

This actually also reminds me of glue books. A friend has a YouTube channel: Relax Cute Glue, but this reminds me of her big random glue books. Oh, and she does Pick 5 challenges, where she has to use images from certain pages. Her magazine harvest videos have taught me a lot. She loves to have people sitting on hamburgers or gigantic eyes on small people.

Anyway, her videos might make the actual photomontages seem less intimidating.
