As other members said, when it comes to paper is really a matter of choice and medium. Personally, most of the time I use watercolor paper that I cut myself with a paper trimmer, and I also like to round the corners, as @janae said.
I use watercolor paper when I draw and paint in watercolor, acrylics, markers or oil pastels. If I use soft pastels, I use pastel paper, like Canson Mi-Teintes or even sandpaper, that again, I cut myself and then glue the back to sturdier base, like watercolor paper or cardstock. Use what you have, don't overthink it
When it comes to the 4th card for the host, I never tell them which one is for her/him. I just send 4 cards, and they choose the one they want to keep.
