This is the first Tarot Card swap in a few years. Previously,
@CynthiaSillitoe ran a
Major Arcana swap in 2022 and before that
@TSMarie hosted a
Tarot swap in 2018. Hopefully both will forgive me for borrowing some of their language for my take on a Tarot Card swap!
I was not able to join either of those times, but have always enjoyed the range of design for Tarot cards. The ancient tarot deck has evolved into the modern 78-card deck with 22 major arcana cards and 56 minor arcana cards. You are probably most familiar with Rider-Waite deck. The New York Times recently ran an Overlooked obituary for the artist behind those cards,
Pamela Coleman Smith. Worth a read even if you don't join the swap.
Wikipedia has a few nice nice pages on the
Major Arcana and
Rider-Waite deck. I like both the ability to feature individual items through the major arcana or the challenge of the minor arcana cards. For the minor cards, featuring 5 or more items in an ATC can become a bit of a challenge, or using just one or two elements can also be bit tricky, at least to me. Tarot cards are used in some countries as playing cards, but they also are used for fortune telling. My interest is really in the breadth of creativity you can find in Tarot cards.
Added Feb 1: If you're inspired by traditional Tarot or want to create cards based on a favorite deck, that's fine. For cards that are more influenced, please indicate on the back of your card which arcana influenced your design. Since I'm adding this after the swap has already started, if you do want cards that are more direct representations, let me know. You can send a DM or mention when you mail your cards in.
My examples will be in the next post.
If you have questions or need clarifications, please ask. Also, do post your cards in the swap and chatting in the swap is good by me; I always enjoy it.
Swap Requirements ~
1. Each card must feature a card from a Tarot deck.
2. All cards should be standard 3.5” x 2.5”
3. This swap is 3 for 3. An extra card for the host is lovely and I genuinely appreciate it, but is completely optional. Sometimes I only have 3 ideas for a swap, so don't feel bad if you don't include a host card.
4. Each card should be labeled with the swap name, your username, your real name, date of creation, and your location.
Other stuff:
Mailing Information ~
* Include your username and swap name on the back of your envelope.
* US Participants – Please include a clearly written mailing label and stamp. This is what I prefer. If you send a SASE I'll use it, but not my first choice.
* International Participants - Please send a mailing label. I will cover return postage. You don't need to send a SASE; I'll use it, but not my first choice.
*Late cards past a day or so will be returned.
*Feedback/Reputation:
When you receive your returns, please leave Feedback for me as the host. I'll leave you Feedback when I receive your cards.
Use Reputation to thank the artists who's cards you received. Also, in the reputation, naming which card you received is nice, since some people like to know where their artworks end up.
