The Moai are giant stone statues on Easter Island that represent deified ancestors, stand mostly on stone platforms called ahu,
They were carved by the Rapa Nui people between 1250 and 1500.
History and Meaning
Carving: Made mostly from soft volcanic ash at the Rano Raraku quarry.
Purpose: Built to honor important chiefs and ancestors, watching over the island.
Design: Most statues face inland with large heads and hidden bodies buried underground
