NOT Hand Drawn/Hand Painted - Butterflies~ Due June 18 (non-Australians - May 21)

jo.on.the.go - I didn't know about how they are displayed but I knew one of the ways to tell a moth from a butterfly was how they held their wings when at rest - a moth has their wings flat out while a butterfly generally holds their wings vertically above their body.
As a child I always thought that butterflies had pretty colours and designs while moths were the boring colours - I now know that this isn't always the case. :D

welcome MACE
Moths are Dorsal view, Butterflies are Ventral view. Preschool teacher here!

NancyL - so glad that you found some napkins you are happy with. (I have a whole section in my craft room for butterfly napkins - obviously I have been collecting napkins for too long :embarrassed:)
stacy - you will be missed but real life comes first
ohfivetwo - welcome to the thread and our site. if you have any questions please feel free to either ask here or send me a PM - there is no such thing as a silly question

I finished my cards and have to pack them up. I've been taking my outgoing mail to a drop box so I will let you know when I do that. I'm hoping to make another set of letters for leydab.

I haven’t decided if I’m going to do six yet or not but I played around with these today and I made the host gift. I’m probably gonna do six but I haven’t just haven’t decided. I almost have a month to get them in the mail. I just messed up on another international swap. I’m not gonna do it here. Here’s what I have so far but I’m getting ready to go by GELLI and I’m gonna try to apply that to the other cards. If I do do three more these are all diet cuts and rubber stamps (and thank you, Donna. I figured out how to work with the rubber stamp that had the butterfly separate from the antenna thing). I colored these after they were already on the card. The middle one gave me the most grief and took the most time because I took the cut outs from the dye cut. I cut two different butterflies, one dark blue one light blue and I used the light blue inside to put on that butterfly that’s hanging off the edge.

MACE - on card 6 I embossed the design then used fine sandpaper to rub the top off the embossed design, you have to rub very lightly to avoid flattening the embossing. On card 7 it is called 'emboss resist' and means that I stamped the butterflies on white card and clear embossed them, then I blended inks over this. Then you wipe the card with paper towel which removes the ink from the embossed surfaces.
Great cards so far and your technique putting the pale blue into the darker blue outline is called 'paper piecing' as you piece the design back together.
NancyL - I will keep an eye out for your cards
EvieCrow - welcome to my swap and this site. If you have any questions feel free to ask in the thread or send me a PM - there is no such thing as a silly question, we all remember being new to the site and how confusing it can seem.

I'm NOT signing up for this swap because I prefer to draw butterflies. However, I wanted to share what I learned at a nature journaling workshop yesterday. The presentation was by John Muir Laws, a prominent wildlife artist. You can look up his art on line. He pointed out that DEAD butterflies, especially those found as museum specimens, have the front wings held upward with the tips extending beyond the head. LIVING butterflies do not position themselves like that; instead when landing on plants, the upper wings are held straight across in aligment with the head. I have attached some photos for your reference. If you look up photos of butterflies on plants and see them with their wings held more forward than their heads, the photographer has probably positioned a dead butterfly on the plant before taking the photo. Often on these photos you can see the pin through the thorax where the person preserving the specimen has pinned down the dead butterfly. Here are some monarchs.

It’s very interested to learn that all of my stamps are apparently of dead butterflies… might need to make some new ones!
